MAKE AN IFR HOOD

MATERIALS - Safety glasses, tape, (optional: paint, sandpaper)
This is one area in aviation where you can save a few dollars by simply spending a few minutes of time. The idea is to create a device that will block vision to references outside the airplane, and allow a view of just the instruments on the panel.
A visit to your local hardware store will find a variety of safety glasses. I recommend finding a cheap, clear set, with as small or flat of sides as possible to allow a comfortable fit under your headset. Make sure to get one with side protection so you will be able to block out the side vision as well.

CREWS TACOMA ($2, good example of cheap and functional set)
GATEWAY STROBE ($2, another cheap and functional set)
ENCON TUFF-SPEC ($5, maybe a little stronger)

Ok, so this is quite simple. Use some tape, electrical tape is easy and cheap. Tape off the glasses so you can only see the panel. You just saved around $20. As another option, you can tape off until you see only the panel. Then, when you have determined what exactly works, make a mark on the glasses where the tape ends. Remove the tape, and tape the area that was previously uncovered. Sand and paint the rest of the glasses. Remove the tape, and you have a cheap set of safety glasses.
